When floor space is tight, walls become your planting beds. Climbers on tension wires, wall-mounted planters, and green wall systems all allow you to introduce greenery without sacrificing ground area.
This vertical approach also softens hard boundaries and draws the eye upward, enhancing the sense of space. Star jasmine, trachelospermum, and climbing roses work well on sunny walls; ivy, climbing hydrangea, and Virginia creeper suit shadier aspects.
For more structured vertical interest, pergolas and open structures can support climbing plants while creating overhead greenery that makes a courtyard feel like an outdoor room.
Container Gardening
Containers offer flexibility that fixed beds can’t match. Group pots of varying heights for impact, choose planters that complement your paving, and don’t be afraid to go large—one substantial container makes more statement than several small ones scattered about.
The ability to move and rearrange also means you can adapt the space seasonally. Swap out tired summer bedding for winter structure, or reconfigure the layout for entertaining.
Consider self-watering containers or an automated irrigation system if you travel frequently. Even the best planting scheme fails if maintenance becomes a burden.

A water feature brings sound and movement to an enclosed space—and masks urban noise remarkably well. Wall-mounted spouts, self-contained bowls, or even a small wildlife pond can transform the atmosphere of a courtyard.

Choosing Patio Materials
In an enclosed courtyard, your paving choice dominates the visual field. Light-coloured natural stone or porcelain reflects light and makes the space feel larger. Large format slabs reduce grout lines and create a cleaner, more contemporary feel.
Consider drainage carefully. Courtyards often have limited natural drainage, so permeable paving or properly designed falls to drainage channels prevent waterlogging.
