Resin Bound Driveways in Surrey

Permeable, hard-wearing driveways designed as part of the whole arrival, not bolted on afterwards. Based in Dorking, working across Surrey and Sussex.

A resin bound driveway Surrey homes are choosing in increasing numbers is SUDS-compliant by nature — the permeable surface allows rainwater to drain through rather than run off, which means no planning permission is required for driveways under 5m² and no flood risk to neighbouring properties.

Our resin driveway Surrey installations use UV-stable resin systems and washed, graded aggregate — cheaper systems yellow, crack, and delaminate within a few years; the systems we specify carry a 10-year guarantee and maintain their appearance for 20+ with basic maintenance.

A permeable driveway Surrey planning authorities now strongly encourage — particularly for front gardens where traditional impermeable surfaces have contributed to local flooding and the loss of urban biodiversity over the past two decades.

For a resin bound driveway Dorking and surrounding villages, our local knowledge of the area’s geology and drainage patterns means we specify the right sub-base depth and edging detail for the ground conditions on your specific plot.

Every resin bound system we install is a SUDS compliant driveway by design — the bound aggregate acts as a filter medium, reducing runoff rates and improving water quality before it reaches the drainage system.

A resin garden path or patio brings the same clean, permeable finish as our resin-bound driveways to the rest of your outdoor space, and because the surface is porous it lets rainwater soak away naturally rather than running off.

Most resin-bound driveways in Surrey get installed in isolation. A specialist arrives, lays the resin over the existing sub-base, and leaves. The result looks smart for a year, then the boundary edges crack and the drainage never quite works. We do things differently.

Permeable and SUDS compliant

Water soaks through to the soil below, drains naturally, and meets current planning permission rules without paperwork.

Designed, not bolted on

Driveway, planting, lighting and boundaries detailed together. The driveway sits inside a proper design for the whole arrival.

15-year lifespan

Proper sub-base preparation, sealed correctly, and serviced annually. A driveway that still looks new in 2041.

Why most resin driveways go wrong

Most contractors treat a resin driveway as a product, not a design. They price per square metre, lay over whatever sub-base is there, and move on. A year or two later:

edges crumble when the sub-base shifts
drainage routes into the street instead of the garden
planting pockets look like an afterthought
the driveway colour clashes with the house
boundary walls and gates get damaged and never get fixed
weeds creep in where the edge detail wasn’t planned

The driveway slowly stops looking right and stops working properly. What was meant to be a 20-year investment becomes a 5-year problem.

What Wild by Design does differently

We design driveways as part of a complete arrival. Because we are garden designers first, the driveway sits inside a proper design for the whole front of the property. That means:

full sub-base specification, laid to current SUDS standards
permeable surface, no planning permission needed in most Surrey homes
coordinated planting pockets, specimen trees and low hedging
lighting built into the design from the start (see our garden lighting ideas)
boundary walls, gates and railings detailed at the same time
colour and aggregate matched to the house and surroundings

The result is a driveway that looks considered from day one and stays right for 15 years and more. It is part of the garden, not a slab dropped in front of it.

What’s included in our resin bound driveway installs:

Sub-base, surface, edges, drainage, planting and aftercare, the whole driveway, not just the resin layer

How much does a resin bound driveway cost in Surrey?

Resin-bound driveway costs in the UK typically sit between £90 and £140 per square metre supplied and laid over a suitable sub-base. Surrey tends to sit at the higher end of that range because of the clay subsoils (more groundwork needed) and the standard of installation most homeowners expect.

A rough guide:

Small front driveway (25 to 40 m²): £3,000 to £5,500
Average Surrey driveway (50 to 80 m²): £5,500 to £10,000
Larger driveways with turning circles (80 to 150 m²): £10,000 to £21,000
Full design-integrated project (driveway, planting, lighting, boundaries): from £15,000

Every project gets a written quote after a site visit. No hidden extras, no per-metre surprises once the groundwork starts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between resin bound and resin bonded?

Resin bound mixes aggregate and resin together in a forced-action mixer, then trowels the mix onto the sub-base. The finish is smooth, permeable and SUDS-compliant. Resin bonded scatters loose stone onto a layer of resin. The finish is rougher, not permeable, and can shed stone over time. For driveways, resin bound is almost always the right choice.

How much does a resin bound driveway cost in Surrey?

Most Surrey driveways come in at £90 to £140 per square metre supplied and installed. The total job typically sits between £5,500 and £15,000 depending on size and sub-base work. A full design-integrated project (driveway plus front-garden scheme) starts around £15,000.

Do I need planning permission for a resin bound driveway?

Usually no. Under the Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) Order, you do not need planning permission for a front driveway as long as the surface is permeable, which resin bound surfaces are. Conservation areas and listed properties have different rules and we check this as part of the site visit.

How long does a resin bound driveway last?

A properly installed resin bound driveway, laid on a suitable sub-base, lasts 15 to 25 years with no significant intervention. Most problems come from poor sub-base preparation, not from the resin itself. Every install we do is backed by a 15-year warranty.

Can I jet wash my resin driveway?

Yes, carefully. Use a low pressure setting (under 100 bar) and a wide fan nozzle held at least 30cm from the surface. Never use a turbo or pin-point nozzle, both can lift the aggregate. An annual jet wash plus a light sealant top-up keeps the surface looking new. We bundle annual jet washing into our garden maintenance schedule for clients who want it handled.

What are the downsides of a resin driveway?

Three honest ones: cost (it’s more expensive upfront than tarmac), heavy vehicle use (skip lorries and HGV deliveries can damage the surface), and weed growth in the surrounding edges if the sub-base isn’t laid properly. None of these are deal-breakers for a domestic driveway, all are managed by good design and installation.

Is resin bound better than block paving?

For most Surrey front gardens, yes. Resin bound is permeable (block paving often is not), lower maintenance (no weeding between joints), smoother to walk on, and available in a wider range of colours. Block paving still wins on traditional period properties where the formal look matters.
